Favorite iOS Apps for Preschoolers

Yep I know, kids should only get so much screen time.  I get it.  I practice it. But there are times where the iPhone or the iPad is a life saver and saves all of our sanity! Waiting for a medical appointment, long trips in the car or just watching a favorite show online – today’s technology while not completely “necessary” is helpful and we embrace it.

I’ve downloaded a lot of apps over the years, many of them, probably most of them, just weren’t what we needed or expected and quickly got deleted. But through trial and error we have discovered a few really great apps for the little one.

**Note that some of these apps might be available on other non iOS devices.

yamma mamma app

Apparently Mamma Yamma is a popular puppet on CBC Kids.  To be honest I had never heard of her until we came across this app. And even without any background on the character this quickly became a favorite.  I’m not sure what she is.  I though she was actually a pig for the longest time but I think she may me a potato. Either way, this little app is a gem for the preschool crowd.  Mamma Yamma has a photo album of pics from her adventures (apparently she is quite the traveler) and the object is for kids to dress her up to match the picture. Manipulation of the app is pretty intuitive and easy for this age group and once they complete the outfit they are a rewarded with cute praise from Mamma Yamma (Thank you Cookie)!

Story Corner (CBC)

This is another little gem from CBC. Read and listen to some cute animal character stories in this interactive story book.  Another easy to manipulate app for little fingers.  You can also write your own story (that part requires some help) and watch it come to life.

Wee Subs

This is one of the few “game” apps that we have and Molly LOVES it.  I don’t buy a lot of apps but this was worth ever penny of the $2.99 I paid for it. The premise here is you build your own sub, you launch it and then  go on an under water adventure collecting sea creatures and gems while avoiding hazards.  One of the many things I love about this game is that bumping into the hazards doesn’t stop the game or cost a “life” – it just causes a bit of a bang and you keep on going.  Once she played it a couple of times she needed absolutely no help with the game at all.  The whole thing is built for little hands and the graphics are adorable and the music and sounds are pleasant and will not drive you crazy!

Blox 3D Junior

This is a cool little app that allows kids to build their own 3D block creations.  The change choose different color blocks and with a quick swipe can rotate their creation to see (and build) it from other angles.  This might take a little bit of parental help while they get the hang of it.

Disney Princess Royal Salon

If you have a little princess chances are they will love this cute Disney app.  It allows them to pick their favorite Disney princess and dress her up for a special occasion.  It’s loaded with customizable gowns and accessories and they can even style their hair!  Your little princess can also create her own album, complete with a picture of herself on the cover, that stores pictures of her fashion creations.

Piano Infinity

I’ve had this app on my phone forever.  It’s a simple little piano app that does just what you thing it does.  One of the features I really like is you can lock the screen so when the little fingers are playing a tune they don’t accidentally close the app. Easy, musical fun!

Bubble Wrap Free

iPad, iPhone, iPod touch

You don’t get any simpler than this one.  Just open the app and start popping! You can chose to either just pop away at your leisure or take on a challenge like how many bubbles can you pop in a minute or how fast can you pop 500 bubbles.
